Having Trouble Paying Your Mortgage? The Homeowner Assistance Fund May Be Able to Help

Millions of Americans are still struggling to make their mortgage payments. If you’re one of them, here are things you need to know.

A federal assistance program called the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) was passed as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. The purpose of the program is to prevent mortgage delinquencies and defaults, foreclosures, loss of utilities or home energy services, and displacement of homeowners experiencing financial hardship after January 21, 2020.

Funds from the HAF may be used for assistance with mortgage payments, homeowner’s insurance, utility payments, and other specified purposes.

The HAF program is overseen by the U.S. Treasury Department and administered by the states, territories, and tribes. Nearly every state has launched their HAF programs.

Where you live will determine what HAF program is possibly available to you.

A number of the programs began accepting applications earlier this year.

If you were financially impacted by COVID-19 and are having trouble making payments for your home, you can check if you’d be eligible for assistance by visiting this website.
